Tae-Hunn Lee Lic.Ac, MBAcC, PGCE, ICOM Lecturer

I graduated from ICOM in 2003 and have been in private, full-time practice since then. My interests lie in the practical application of the Philosophy of Stems & Branches.

I am a student of Joan Duveen and have been studying with him since 2001, deepening my understanding and practical application of 5 Elements, Stems & Branches Acupuncture and Pulse Diagnosis.

I have been teaching on these subjects at ICOM since 2005 and am a student and practitioner of Tai Chi, Nei Gung and movement arts.

Chinese Philosophy describes how Qi emerges from the Oneness and Unity in Heaven. This Qi fragments and differentiates itself further and further through the forces of yin and yang and manifests itself as the life force that gives rise to all creation.

The Philosophy of Stems and Branches describes this process of revelation of Cosmic Energy and how each one of us is created as a unique Individual, each with his or her own unique strength and weaknesses and imbalances.

The 10 Stems describe the development and manifestation of our inner world as Organs but also as consciousness. The 12 Branches describe the development of the part of our being that makes contact with the outer world, which is often described as the Meridian System with a connection to our thoughts and emotions.

The Stems and Branches of our Date of Birth give each Individual unique ways of reaching out to life, but also of making contact with our true, authentic self. Consciousness acts as a bridge between our inner world and the outer world and we should respond to life’s stimuli and challenges in accord with our Shen. When our response to life is not guided by our Shen, thoughts and emotions are not an expression of our heart but are shaped and guided by outside influences, eventually leading to further imbalances and alienation from our true nature. In Stems and Branches Philosophy, this is seen as a cause of illness.

Through the right way of dealing with our thoughts and emotions we can find the centre of pure consciousness and being within us. It enables us to lead a rich life according to the laws of Heaven, guided by love, compassion and true happiness. We are able to respond to life and its challenges appropriately and live life creatively as an unfolding of our true nature.

The Philosophy of Stems and Branches gives us tools to guide a person to lead a conscious life, so they can not only be attuned to the laws and rhythms of the Universe, but can also make contact with their true nature so they can nourish themselves on all levels and find their own direction in life.

I was introduced to this practical philosophy by Dr. van Buren and his student and my teacher and mentor Joan Duveen. A philosophy is a living tradition and should help us to understand the deeper aspects of life. Its wisdom can only be grasped by conscious practice and application in life. The validity and truth we find in this Philosophy is being kept alive and lives through every being living according to its principles.
